Belt Examinations Procedure

An applicant who wish to attend any rank or belt examination for Dan/Duan or equivalent Rank should follow the following procedure:

  1. Check the administrative prerequisites table, and make sure you poses all required criteria for attending the desired examination.
  2. Check the technical syllabus and criteria for performance evaluation for your desired rank and make sure you can successfully complete all examination on hand.
  3. Fill-in the application form.
  4. Sign the waiver form.
  5. Sign his partner/s on the partner waiver form.
  6. Attached a scanned copy of all his former relevant official rank certificates.
  7. Attach a short C.V. in English, describing his martial arts experience.
  8. Paying the Pre-examination evaluation fee for the desired rank.
  9. Submitting all the above paperwork, and payment confirmation to XXXXXXXX

Upon receiving full documentation and payment, we will start a Pre-examination evaluation process to check the applicant’s eligibility to be examined.

We will issue an official answer within 21 working days.

If the applicant is not eligible to continue the process to the examination/s, he/she will receive a written explanation describing the criteria lucks. If there are only missing papers, the applicant can send them within 21 working days and they will be revised. If criteria is not met, the applicant will not be able to continue the process, if wishing to apply again in the future, will need to start the full process (and payments) from the beginning.

If the applicant is eligible to continue the process to the examination/s stage, he/she should:

  1. Pay the examination fee for the desired rank.
  2. Prepare for the technical and or other examinations
  3. Coordinate a date for the examination with us.
  4. Attend the examination with his partner/s.

If the applicant has successfully passed the examination, he/she will need to pay the Certificate production fee. The certificate will be issued within 30 days of the Certificate production fee payment date, and send via registered airmail to the applicant.

If the applicant will fail the examination, he will receive within 30 days a written explanation of the topics he needs to improve for the desired rank. Additional examination, requires additional payment of the examination fee.

Exceptions

Each candidate may ask for one exception in his application form.

Exceptions must be minimal such as:

Minimum age for 6 Dan is 34 instead of 35.

Total years of training experience for 7th Dan is not 30, it’s 29.

In the category, “Students who are instructors” for 8th Dan, there are only 9 instead of 10.

Technical syllabus

Martial arts or combat styles may have different syllabus and techniques for ranks, however, technical progression for various arts is usually similar. In each style we can note:

  • Basic techniques and fundamentals.
  • Intermediate techniques and principles.
  • Advanced techniques and concepts.
  • Training with a Partner/s
  • Training with equipment (punching bag, Makiwara, weapons…).
  • Forms, Kata, set drills or sequences training.
  • Sparring (not in all styles).

Therefore, an applicant must have knowledge and performance ability in all the above aspects of his style,  when attending an examination.

Criteria for performance evaluation:

 

  1. Applying good safety practice:

Protecting your partners at all times

Avoiding performance of over extensions in joints

Proper clothing and undamaged equipment

Use of intact safety gear

  1. Balance – Demonstrating good balance and stability at all times
  2. Coordination – Demonstrating high coordination ability which include:

Accuracy

Timing

Distancing

Power application / strength adjustment

General control

Space control

Sharpness

Flow / continuity

Techniques polish

Effectively of drills

Complexity level/difficulty of drills

Corporation with the partners

For 1st -2nd degree black belt, the applicant should be able to explain each technique fine points, and how it is connected to the style fundamentals.

In addition, for 3rd-4th degree black belt, the applicant should also be able to explain the connection between each technique and the style principles.

For 5th black belt and up
